Major Past Projects

Major Projects which have been implemented and executed by Elmhirst Institute of Community Studies are below.

DAY CARE CENTRE FOR AGED

With the financial support of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India, the centre was run at the Surul village, Sriniketan, Birbhum district, West Bengal from 1991 to 2009, to provide recreational facilities, medical help and counselling to aged persons.

ACTION & ADVOCACY PROGRAMME ON REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH OF ADOLESCENTS & POOR WOMEN

The project was implemented during the period from 1997-2000, to promote the state of reproductive health of rural poor women through health (including sexual aspects) education for adolescents, gynaecological education for women and promotion of spacing methods of family planning, with the financial support of The John D & Catherine T MacArthur Foundation, USA.

INTEGRATED REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR ADDICTS

With the financial support of Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India, the organization run the centre during the period from 2002 to 2017,  to de-addict the clients of several narcotics or drug abuse and assist them for their rehabilitation.

INTEGRATED NUTRITION AND HEALTH PROJECT

The project was executed during the period from 2002 to 2010, to reduce malnutrition among children and to achieve sustainable improvement in the nutrition and health status of women and children through convergence of ICDS, Health and PRI, with the financial support of CARE India.

SPECIAL SCHOOLS FOR CHILD LABOURERS

The special schools were run in Birbhum district, West Bengal during the period from 2005 to 2009, to bring the child labours in the age group of 9-14 years into mainstream of education and rehabilitation through vocational training, with the support of Birbhum District Child Labour Rehabilitation cum Welfare Society.

REPRODUCTIVE AND CHILD HEALTH PROGRAMME AS MOTHER NGO

The organization as the Mother NGO of the Birbhum district, WB, was entrusted by the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of West Bengal, to eimplement the MNGO-FNGO Scheme: Reproductive and Child Health Programme (RCH-II&III) to reduce maternal mortality and infant/child mortality incidences and ensure safe motherhood and improved and sustained reproductive and child health status in the underserved areas of Birbhum district. The programme was implemented during the period from 2006 to 2012.

WEST BENGAL CIVIL SOCIETY SUPPORT PROGRAMME

The project to highlight, identify and strengthen the health service delivery mechanism for increasing the accessibility for the poor and marginalized especially for the mothers, new born and under five children, was executed in Nalhati-I Block, Birbhum district with the support of DFID, UK through PRIA, West Bengal, during the period from 2008 to 2009.

DOROTHY ELMHIRST TRAINING & REHABILITATION CENTRE

In 2008-2010, with the financial support of Dorothy Whitney Elmhirst Trust, UK, the centre was run to impart vocational training in various trades to the women and girls in need for their rehabilitation and self dependence.

CAMPAIGN ON SAFE MOTHERHOOD UNDER WHITE RIBBON ALLIANCE

Campaign on safe motherhood through Quiz Competitions and other IEC activities was carried out in Birbhum district, West Bengal during 2009-2012, under the programme of White Ribbon Alliance India for Safe Motherhood, with the support of CINI, Pailan, 24 Parganas, WB.

COMMUNITY HEALTH CARE MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE

During 2010-2013, with the support of CARE India, the project was run in Birbhum, West Bengal to empower the community to demand and access public health programmes through active involvement of PRIs and Community Based Organizations/ SHGs in planning, implementing and managing of public health issues.

UNIVERSAL SALT IODIZATION PROGRAMME

During 2011-2012, with the support of UNICEF, Kolkata, the project was implemented for Promotion of Universal Salt Iodization programme through awareness generation at schools and among rural community through household level salt testing by SHGs, salt testing at retail shop, conducting retail market survey of salt quality and sensitize salt traders in Birbhum, West Bengal.

PREVENTION OF CHILD MARRIAGE

With the support of UNICEF, Kolkata, the project was executed in 2011-2012 for developing a convergent roadmap for countering child marriage in the district Birbhum and intensive awareness campaigns through distribution of IEC materials and information sharing.

TAGORE COMMEMORATION GRANT SCHEME

During the period 2011-2012, with the financial support of Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India, the project was implemented to extend Rabindranath Tagore’s thought on rural reconstruction among the stakeholders of different levels of Birbhum district, West Bengal.
